Rules of the road

You see double red lines painted along the edge of a road. What do they mean?

  • Waiting is allowed for one hour
  • Loading is permitted at any time
  • No stopping at any time (a red route)
    Correct
  • Parking is free at weekends

Why?

Double red lines mark a red route, where Rule 240 of The Highway Code says you must not stop or park at any time, unless signs show otherwise. This keeps busy main roads flowing freely.
