Rules of the road

You want to reverse into a side road. What must you check for behind you before you start?

  • Pedestrians, especially children, and cyclists behind you
    Correct
  • Only the cars showing in your mirrors
  • Nothing, as long as you reverse slowly
  • The colour of the road markings

Why?

Rule 202 of The Highway Code says before reversing you must check there are no pedestrians, particularly children, cyclists or obstructions behind you. A small child can be hard to see, so get out and look if you are not sure.
