Rules of the road

What is the national speed limit for a car on a single carriageway road?

  • 50 mph
  • 70 mph
  • 40 mph
  • 60 mph
    Correct

Why?

The national speed limit is the maximum where no other limit is signed. Rule 124 of The Highway Code sets this at 60 mph for a car on a single carriageway, and 70 mph on a dual carriageway or motorway. Remember these are limits, not targets — you must still drive to the conditions.
