Rules of the road

On which side should you normally overtake another moving vehicle?

  • On the left
  • On whichever side has more space
  • Only by using the hard shoulder
  • On the right
    Correct

Why?

In the UK you drive on the left, so you overtake on the right, where the driver ahead can see you and you have a clear view past them. Rule 163 of The Highway Code sets this out. You may pass on the left only in limited cases, such as when the vehicle ahead is signalling to turn right, or in slow-moving queues where your lane is moving faster.
