Rules of the road

You want to take the first exit (to the left) at a roundabout. How should you signal and position?

  • Signal left and keep to the left-hand lane
    Correct
  • Signal right and keep to the right-hand lane
  • Give no signal and stay in the right lane
  • Signal left only after you have left the roundabout

Why?

Rule 186 of The Highway Code covers signals and lane position at roundabouts. To take the first exit on the left, approach in the left-hand lane, signal left, and keep signalling left until you have left the roundabout.
