Rules of the road

The double white lines in the road have a broken line nearest you. When may you overtake a slower vehicle?

  • Never, double white lines always mean no overtaking
  • Only after dark
  • If it is safe and you can finish before any solid line on your side
    Correct
  • Only if the driver ahead waves you past

Why?

Rule 128 of The Highway Code says that where the line nearest you is broken, you may cross the double white lines to overtake, but only if it is safe and you can finish before reaching a solid line on your side.
