Vehicle handling
Your car begins to skid. What is usually the main cause of a skid?
- The road surface alone
- The way the driver brakes, accelerates or steersCorrect
- A fault in the tyres that cannot be avoided
- Other drivers around you
Why?
Skids are caused by the driver, not the car or the road on its own. Rule 119 of The Highway Code explains that harsh braking, sudden acceleration or steering too sharply for the conditions makes the tyres lose grip. Driving smoothly and slowing down in good time is the best way to avoid skidding.
