Vehicle handling

You are driving on packed snow. How can you reduce the risk of wheelspin and keep the best grip?

  • Use as high a gear as possible and accelerate very gently
    Correct
  • Use the lowest gear and press the accelerator hard
  • Keep the clutch down and let the car roll
  • Brake sharply before each bend

Why?

Rule 231 of The Highway Code says that in icy or snowy weather you should drive at a slow speed in as high a gear as possible and accelerate and brake very gently, so the tyres are less likely to spin and lose grip.
