You are driving a four-wheel drive vehicle on an icy road. How does this affect the way you should drive?
- You can brake and corner normally because grip is doubled
- You no longer need to leave a large gap to the car in front
- You should still slow right down, as four-wheel drive does not help you stop on iceCorrect
- You can safely use higher speeds than other vehicles
Why?
Four-wheel drive can help you get moving, but it does not improve your braking or grip on ice. Rule 231 of The Highway Code still applies — drive slowly and gently — because stopping distances on ice can be up to ten times greater (Rule 126).
