Vehicle handling
You have anti-lock brakes (ABS) and need to stop in an emergency. How should you use the brake?
- Apply firm, continuous pressure to the pedalCorrect
- Pump the brake pedal on and off
- Brake gently so the system has time to work
- Press the brake and clutch, then release both
Why?
Rule 120 of The Highway Code says that in an emergency in a vehicle with ABS you should apply the footbrake firmly and not release the pressure until you have slowed enough. This lets the system keep the wheels turning so you can still steer.
