Vehicle handling

You are overtaking another vehicle at night. When should you switch from dipped headlights to main beam?

  • Once you are level with the vehicle, if it will not dazzle others
    Correct
  • Straight away, before you start to overtake
  • Only after you have finished overtaking and pulled back in
  • Never use main beam when overtaking

Why?

Rule 115 of The Highway Code says to keep your headlights dipped when overtaking until you are level with the other vehicle, then change to main beam if needed, provided this would not dazzle oncoming road users.
