In thick fog, why should you not drive close behind the rear lights of the vehicle in front?

It uses more fuel
It is against the speed limit
Your own lights will switch off
Their rear lights can give you a false sense of security

Why?

Rule 235 of The Highway Code warns that following the tail lights ahead in fog can give a false sense of security and leaves too little room to stop if the vehicle brakes suddenly. Stay back so you can pull up well within the distance you can see.
