Vehicle handling

The back of your car slides out to the right in a skid. Which way should you steer to correct it?

  • To the left, away from the skid
  • Straight ahead without turning
  • Sharply to the left, then hard right
  • To the right, in the same direction the rear is sliding
    Correct

Why?

Rule 119 of The Highway Code says to correct a rear-wheel skid you steer into the skid: if the rear slides to the right, steer to the right until the wheels line up again. Avoid oversteering, which can cause a skid the other way.
