Vehicle handling

You are approaching a bend on an icy road. What is the safest way to take it?

  • Brake gently on the straight before the bend, then steer smoothly round it
    Correct
  • Brake hard while turning the wheel
  • Accelerate through the bend to keep momentum
  • Coast round with the clutch pressed down

Why?

Rule 231 of The Highway Code says that on ice you should brake progressively on the straight before you reach the bend, then, having slowed down, steer smoothly round it, avoiding the sudden actions that cause a skid.
