Vehicle handling
You have just driven slowly through a ford or deep flood water. What should you do next?
- Speed up straight away to dry the engine
- Test your brakes gently to make sure they still workCorrect
- Turn off your lights so they do not short out
- Pump the accelerator hard several times
Why?
Water on the brakes makes them far less effective until it clears. Rule 121 of The Highway Code says after driving through a ford or flood you should test your brakes, gently at first, before you build up speed. If they are weak, dry them by pressing lightly while driving slowly.
