Alertness

You're parked at the side of the road and want to move off. What should you do just before moving?

  • Look round to check your blind spots
    Correct
  • Sound your horn to warn other drivers
  • Switch on your hazard warning lights
  • Wave to drivers behind to let them pass

Why?

Mirrors don't show you everything. There are areas behind and beside your car that mirrors can't see, called blind spots. Rule 159 of The Highway Code says you must look round for a final check just before you move off, as well as using your mirrors and signalling if needed.
