Alertness

You need to make a phone call while you're driving. What should you do?

  • Make the call quickly while driving slowly
  • Use the phone only while waiting at traffic lights
  • Hold the phone near the steering wheel so you can see the road
  • Stop in a safe and legal place before using the phone
    Correct

Why?

It's illegal to hold a mobile phone while driving, and this includes when you're stopped at traffic lights or in traffic queues — you're still driving in the eyes of the law. Rule 149 of The Highway Code says you must exercise proper control of your vehicle at all times, so find a safe and legal place to stop first.
