Alertness

You wake up feeling unwell and are due to drive to work. How should this affect your driving?

  • Drive as normal, since a short journey is fine
  • Do not drive until you feel well again
    Correct
  • Drive slowly and take extra breaks
  • Drive only on quiet roads to be safe

Why?

Being unwell slows your reactions and weakens your concentration, which makes a crash more likely. Rule 90 of The Highway Code says you must make sure you are fit to drive, so if illness affects your driving you should not drive until you have recovered.
