Alertness

How often should you use your mirrors while driving along a road?

  • Only just before you turn or change lane
  • Frequently, so you always know what is around you
    Correct
  • Only when you hear a vehicle behind you
  • Once every few minutes to save concentration

Why?

Traffic behind and beside you changes constantly, so a single check is not enough to stay aware. Rule 161 of The Highway Code says all mirrors should be used effectively throughout your journey, and you should use them frequently so you always know what is behind and to each side of you.
