Alertness

Why can't you rely on your mirrors alone to know it is safe to change direction?

  • Mirrors can steam up in cold weather
  • Mirrors make vehicles look closer than they are
  • Mirrors do not cover every area, so there are blind spots
    Correct
  • Mirrors only show vehicles directly behind you

Why?

There are areas to the side and rear that mirrors simply cannot show, called blind spots. Rule 161 of The Highway Code warns that mirrors do not cover all areas and there will be blind spots, so you will need to look round and check before you move.
