Alertness

You are driving towards a low, bright sun that is dazzling you. What should you do?

  • Speed up to get past the bright section quickly
  • Slow down, use your sun visor, and stop if necessary
    Correct
  • Put on your hazard lights and continue
  • Look down at the road just in front of your car

Why?

A low sun can hide pedestrians, signals and other vehicles, so you must be able to react to what you cannot yet see. Rule 237 of The Highway Code says that if you are dazzled by bright sunlight you should slow down and, if necessary, stop; a sun visor helps you keep your view.
