Alertness

You have parked at the kerb and are about to open your door to get out. What should you check for?

  • Cyclists or other traffic approaching from behind
    Correct
  • Only that no car is directly beside you
  • That the road ahead is clear
  • Nothing, as long as you open the door slowly

Why?

An opening door in a cyclist's path can knock them off, causing serious injury. Rule 239 of The Highway Code says you must make sure you do not hit anyone when you open your door, checking for cyclists and other traffic by looking all around and using your mirrors.
