Alertness

You are turning left into a side road. Which road users should you watch for on your left before turning?

  • Only pedestrians on the far pavement
  • Cyclists and motorcyclists who may be alongside you
    Correct
  • Vehicles waiting in the side road
  • Traffic in your rear-view mirror only

Why?

A cyclist or motorcyclist can be close on your left where they are hard to see, and turning across them could cause a collision. Rule 182 of The Highway Code says that when turning left you should watch out for traffic coming up on your left, as cyclists and motorcyclists may be hidden from view.
