Alertness
You're driving on a motorway and begin to feel sleepy. What should you do?
- Stop on the hard shoulder and rest
- Open a window and continue to your destination
- Leave the motorway at the next exit or services and restCorrect
- Slow down and move to the left-hand lane
Why?
Tiredness causes serious crashes because a sleepy driver reacts slowly or falls asleep without warning. Rule 91 of The Highway Code says if you feel sleepy you should stop in a safe place to rest. On a motorway the hard shoulder is only for emergencies, so you must leave at the next exit or motorway services.
