Alertness

An ambulance with flashing blue lights is coming up behind you. What is the safest response?

  • Stay calm, look ahead for a safe place, and let it pass
    Correct
  • Brake hard immediately wherever you are
  • Speed up to get out of its way
  • Mount the kerb straight away

Why?

Reacting in a panic can cause a crash or block the emergency vehicle. Rule 219 of The Highway Code says that when an emergency vehicle approaches you should not panic, but consider its route and take appropriate action to let it pass, without endangering others or braking harshly.
