Essential documents

Why is it a good idea to keep your insurance certificate and MOT certificate somewhere safe?

  • They can be used instead of a driving licence
  • You may be asked to produce them after being stopped
    Correct
  • They must be shown on the windscreen at all times
  • They replace the need to tax the vehicle

Why?

You do not have to carry these documents while driving, but if the police stop you they can ask you to produce your insurance, MOT and licence, usually within 7 days. Keeping them safe makes this easy. Producing documents is covered in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
