Essential documents

Your driving licence has been lost or stolen. What should you do?

  • Keep driving, as a licence is not really needed
  • Apply to the DVLA for a replacement licence
    Correct
  • Draw yourself a new one to use in the meantime
  • Wait for the police to post a new one to you

Why?

If your licence is lost or stolen you must apply to the DVLA for a replacement, which costs a small fee. If it was stolen you should also tell the police. Keeping a valid licence is part of the document rules in Annex 3 of The Highway Code.
