Incidents, accidents and emergencies

You are the last car in a queue of stationary traffic on a motorway. How can you warn drivers coming up fast behind you?

  • Sound your horn continuously
  • Get out and wave at the traffic
  • Briefly switch on your hazard warning lights
    Correct
  • Reverse slowly towards them

Why?

Rule 116 of The Highway Code allows you to use hazard warning lights while moving or stopped on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway to warn drivers behind of a hazard or queue ahead. Use them only long enough for your warning to be seen.
