Incidents, accidents and emergencies

Your engine catches fire. Why should you NOT open the bonnet fully?

  • It is against the law to open a bonnet at the roadside
  • Opening it lets in more air, which can make the fire flare up
    Correct
  • The engine would be too heavy to lift
  • It would set off the car alarm

Why?

Fire needs oxygen to burn. Opening the bonnet fully lets in a rush of air that can make the flames flare up in your face. In line with Rule 283, get everyone well clear of the vehicle and call the fire service rather than opening it up.
