Other types of vehicle

In heavy rain you are behind a large vehicle that is throwing up a lot of spray. What is the safest action?

  • Move closer so its body shelters you from the rain
  • Drop further back to improve your view and use your wipers
    Correct
  • Overtake immediately whatever the conditions
  • Turn off your headlights to reduce glare

Why?

Spray from a large vehicle badly reduces how much you can see, and following too close makes it worse. Rule 222 of The Highway Code says to keep well back from large vehicles, and dropping back gives you a clearer view and more time to react until you can overtake safely.
