Road and traffic signs
A road sign is circular with a red ring around the edge. What kind of message does this shape and colour give?
- It gives an order that tells you what you must not doCorrect
- It warns you about a hazard ahead
- It gives you helpful information about the route
- It shows a direction you may choose to follow
Why?
The shape and colour of a sign tell you its purpose before you can even read the words. Circular signs give orders: a red ring means the order is a prohibition, telling you what you must not do, such as 'no entry' or a speed limit. Rule 109 of The Highway Code says you must obey all traffic signs.
