You are driving and reach a box junction marked with yellow criss-cross lines. When may you enter it?
- At any time, because the lines are only a guide
- Only if the traffic lights are green
- Only when your exit road or lane is clear, unless you are turning rightCorrect
- Never, because the yellow lines mean no stopping
Why?
The yellow criss-cross lines of a box junction keep the junction clear so it does not become blocked. Rule 174 of The Highway Code says you must not enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. The one exception is when you want to turn right and are only stopped by oncoming traffic or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.
