Road and traffic signs

Stop and give way

What must you do when you reach this sign?

  • Slow down and continue if the road is clear
  • Stop completely at the line, then move off only when it's safe
    Correct
  • Stop only if other vehicles are coming
  • Give way without needing to stop

Why?

The octagonal STOP sign is the only sign with this shape, so you can recognise it even when it's covered in snow. Rule 171 of The Highway Code says you MUST stop behind the line at a junction with a stop sign, and wait for a safe gap before you move off — even if the road looks empty.
