Road and traffic signs

Maximum speed 40 mph

You see this sign as you enter a new road. What does it mean?

  • The minimum speed is 40 mph
  • The national speed limit applies
  • The maximum speed is 40 mph
    Correct
  • There is a 40-tonne weight limit

Why?

The red ring shows this is an order you must obey, and the number inside is the highest speed allowed — 40 mph. Local councils set 40 mph limits on some busier roads. Rule 109 of The Highway Code says you must obey all signs giving orders, including speed limits.
