Road and traffic signs

No overtaking

What does this sign mean?

  • Two-way traffic ahead
  • You have priority over oncoming vehicles
  • The dual carriageway ends
  • Overtaking is not allowed
    Correct

Why?

This red-ringed circle is a prohibition: it means no overtaking, so you must not pass the vehicle in front while the restriction lasts. It is used where overtaking would be dangerous, such as near bends or hills. Rule 109 of The Highway Code says you must obey signs giving orders.
