Road and traffic signs

Give way to traffic on the major road

What does this sign tell you to do?

  • Stop completely before the junction in all cases
  • You have priority over traffic on the road ahead
  • Give way to traffic on the major road ahead
    Correct
  • Turn back — the road ahead is closed

Why?

The upside-down triangle is the give way sign — the unique shape works even if the sign is dirty or snow-covered. Rule 172 of The Highway Code says you must give way to traffic on the main road; you only need to stop if it's necessary to wait for a safe gap.
