Road and traffic signs

National speed limit applies

You see this sign on a single carriageway road. What does it mean for a car driver?

  • There is no speed limit on this road
  • The national speed limit applies — 60 mph on this road
    Correct
  • The motorway speed limit of 70 mph applies
  • The 30 mph limit continues

Why?

The white circle with a black diagonal band means the national speed limit applies. Rule 124 of The Highway Code sets this as 60 mph for cars on a single carriageway and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. It never means there's no limit at all.
