Rules of the road

You and an oncoming vehicle both want to turn right at a crossroads. Which method usually gives the safest view?

  • Turn nearside to nearside, passing in front of each other
  • Turn offside to offside, passing behind each other
    Correct
  • Whoever arrives first goes and the other reverses
  • Both turn at the same time, side by side

Why?

Rule 181 of The Highway Code describes turning right at crossroads. Turning offside to offside (passing behind each other) usually gives a clearer view of oncoming traffic than turning nearside to nearside in front of each other.
