Safety and your vehicle

Your car is fitted with a catalytic converter. Why must you use the correct unleaded fuel?

  • Because using leaded fuel would damage the catalytic converter
    Correct
  • Because unleaded fuel makes the engine much more powerful
  • Because the wrong fuel would make the tyres wear out faster
  • Because it stops the battery from going flat

Why?

Lead in petrol coats the metals inside a catalytic converter and ruins it permanently, so it can no longer clean the exhaust. Rule 123 of The Highway Code reminds drivers to reduce their vehicle's impact on the environment, and a working catalytic converter needs unleaded fuel to do that.
