Vehicle loading

You're loading a roof box before a long motorway journey. What must you make sure of?

  • The load is evenly balanced and securely fastened
    Correct
  • The heaviest items are placed at the very front of the box
  • The box is left slightly open to reduce wind resistance
  • The load is stacked as high as the box allows

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says you're responsible for making sure any load is evenly distributed and secured, so it cannot move, fall off, or unbalance the vehicle. An unevenly loaded roof box can affect handling and stability, especially in crosswinds or when braking.
