Vehicle loading

Where should you carry loose items such as a heavy toolbox when driving?

  • On the back seat within easy reach
  • On the parcel shelf so you can see it
  • Loose in the front footwell
  • Secured in the boot so it cannot move
    Correct

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says you must make sure any heavy or sharp objects are secured safely. Loose items can be thrown forward in a sudden stop or crash and injure the people in the car, so carry them secured in the boot rather than loose in the cabin.
