Vehicle loading

Before towing a trailer, what must you check about its weight?

  • That it does not exceed what your vehicle and licence allow
    Correct
  • That it is heavier than the car for better grip
  • That it weighs exactly the same as the car
  • Weight does not matter on short trips

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says you must not overload and must not tow more than your licence permits. The loaded trailer must stay within the manufacturer's towing capacity for your car and within your licence limits, or the outfit becomes unsafe and illegal.
