How do the speed limits change when you are towing a trailer or caravan?

  • They stay exactly the same as for a car
  • Lower limits apply than for a car alone
    Correct
  • They are higher because you have more weight
  • There are no limits while towing

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code reminds you that when towing you must be aware of reduced speed limits. Lower limits apply to a car with a trailer than to a car on its own, and your stopping distance is longer, so you must slow down.
