What happens to your stopping distance when you tow a loaded trailer?

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says that when towing you should be aware of increased stopping distances. The extra weight of a loaded trailer means the vehicle needs more distance to stop, so leave a bigger gap to the vehicle in front.
