Vehicle loading

How should you distribute the weight in a trailer or caravan for the safest towing?

  • All the weight at the very back
  • Heavy items low and over the axle
    Correct
  • Heavy items piled at the front only
  • Everything stacked as high as possible

Why?

Rule 98 of The Highway Code says to distribute the weight evenly, with heavy items over the axle(s) and a small downward load on the tow ball. Loading heavy items low and over the axle keeps the outfit stable and less likely to snake.
