Vulnerable road users
A pedestrian is waiting to cross at a zebra crossing. Why should you not wave or beckon them across?
- It is against the law to signal to pedestrians
- It wastes time and holds up the traffic behind you
- Another vehicle may be approaching that you cannot see, and it could be dangerousCorrect
- Pedestrians are not allowed to cross until the lights change
Why?
Rule 195 of The Highway Code says you should not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across. Another vehicle you cannot see may be approaching, and the pedestrian could step into its path.
