Vulnerable road users
You are following two horse riders on a narrow country lane with a bend ahead. Should you overtake?
- Yes, overtake straight away before the bend
- Yes, if you sound your horn to warn the horses
- Yes, squeeze past between the horses and the hedge
- No, wait until you can pass wide and slow with a clear viewCorrect
Why?
Passing horses needs plenty of space and a clear road ahead. Rule 215 of The Highway Code says to pass horses wide and slow, at no more than 10 mph and at least 2 metres, so wait behind until you can do this safely.
