Vulnerable road users

A wheelchair user is crossing the road at a dropped kerb where there is no marked crossing. What should you do?

  • Slow down, be patient and give way to let them cross
    Correct
  • Carry on, as they should use a proper crossing
  • Drive close past behind them to save time
  • Wave them back onto the pavement

Why?

Wheelchair users are among the most vulnerable and sit low down, so are easy to miss. Rules 204 and 206 of The Highway Code say to look out for and give way to disabled people, driving carefully near where they cross.
