Vulnerable road users
You are approaching a horse and rider on the road. How should you pass them?
- Pass wide and slow, at no more than 10 mph and leaving at least 2 metresCorrect
- Rev your engine so the rider knows you are there
- Pass close and quickly to spend less time beside the horse
- Sound your horn continuously as you pass
Why?
Horses are easily frightened by noise or a vehicle passing too close, and a startled horse can be dangerous. Rule 215 of The Highway Code says you should pass horses wide and slow, at no more than 10 mph, leaving at least 2 metres of space. Avoid sounding your horn or revving your engine.
