Vulnerable road users

You are turning into a side road and a pedestrian has started to cross that road. What should you do?

  • Sound your horn and continue your turn
  • Give way and let the pedestrian finish crossing
    Correct
  • Drive round the pedestrian if there is space
  • Turn quickly before the pedestrian reaches your side

Why?

Pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross at a junction now have priority. Rule H2, supported by Rule 170 of The Highway Code, says you should give way to people crossing or waiting to cross the road you are turning into. Wait patiently until they have finished crossing.
